Cella
- Hospitality
In a fully upgraded warehouse next to the Kattendijkdok on the Eilandje in Antwerp, Belgium, restaurant and bar Cella found its home as the temporary concept of the classic institute 'Het Pomphuis'. The young, vibrant city district along the water has been an epicentre for some years now for all those who love trendy dining and nightlife. Cella serves refined, international cuisine, while the bar serves customised food and drinks until late in the evening. Every table guest at Cella has a view of the water and the famous landmarks of Antwerp.
The warehouse has been stripped and transformed into a restaurant and bar with a stylized, industrial character and a dark, cozy city feel. Only the skeleton of the warehouse was preserved, with the restaurant then inserted as a box-in-box. The load-bearing beams of the warehouse find their visual echo thanks to concrete arches that bring the necessary intimacy to the space.
Carefully considering the sense of touch, the experience of the space becomes an interplay of textures and temperatures in combination with contrasting polished and raw surfaces. The differing textures play an important role in creating a distinctly urban restaurant with obvious industrial references. Cella is an embodiment of the clash between rough and intimate. A space of multiple stories intertwining and correlating to form an inspirational and aesthetic universe for all senses. The use of blue steel, finishes in dark veneer, tactility in upholstery and textiles, a curated selection of high-end design, and a lighting plan with artificial and candlelight ensure an engaging and balanced restaurant experience. Special eye-catchers include the sculptural DJ booth and unique design additions such as a statement light fixture in perforated blue steel.
