Lars-Gunnar Nordström

GRAIN 16

Lars-Gunnar Nordström (1924–2014) was a pioneering Finnish artist and designer, widely regarded as one of the first to introduce concrete art to Finland. Trained in both architecture and interior design, his work bridges fine art and applied design with a bold, geometric visual language. Best known for his dynamic compositions and spatial clarity, Nordström brought the same formal precision and modernist energy to his design commissions—especially in architectural and public contexts.

Created for the interiors of Hotel Hesperia in Helsinki during the 1960s, this rare lamp reflects Nordström’s distinctive visual approach: crisp lines, sculptural form, and a strong sense of rhythm. More than just functional lighting, the piece plays with structure and shadow in a way that mirrors his two-dimensional artworks. Conceived as part of a complete design concept for the hotel, the lamp embodies the clean, forward-looking aesthetic of Finnish modernism at mid-century.
